Procedure

Two players are selected, the cat and the mouse. The rest of the players form the playing field. They are standing in rows and columns, like figures on a chess board. They should be about 1 meter (3 feet) apart from each other (to the left, right, front, and back). All players are looking in the same direction and stretch their arms to their sides. This creates a playing field, where both cat and mouse can only move along the lines formed. They may only run along the bodies of the players, but not pass below their arms. Outside of the square of players, both can move in any direction. The mouse can change the pattern of the players. When the mouse shouts a predefined code word (or claps its hands), all players turn 90 degree to the right. This changes the pattern on the playing field; if cat and mouse could move "east-west" before, they can now move "north-south".

The game itself is then a simple tag game: the cat has to catch the mouse. By exploiting the pattern of the playing field, the mouse has to try and evade the cat as long as possible.

When the cat finally catches the mouse, a new cat and a new mouse are selected.
